Marilyn S. Munsell was born on May 10, 1951 in Morenci, Michigan and raised on a farm near Hudson. After graduating from Hudson High School, Marilyn entered Adrian College in the fall of 1969 as an education major, hoping to become a teacher. She quickly excelled in her history classes and became a history major, with a focus on the colonial period of American history.
She attended graduate school, married, had two daughters, and worked for many years as an archivist. Marilyn's life changed completely after a diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia. She fought the fast-moving cancer for eight months, but passed away on October 22, 2013.
Marilyn's husband, Bill, and daughters, Sarah and Rebecca, share her love of history and decided that assisting history students at Marilyn’s alma mater was a perfect way to honor her life. In 2014, they established the Marilyn Munsell McNitt Research and Professional Development Grants in memory of her accomplishments as an outstanding history student and Adrian College alumna.
Each year the History Department faculty of Adrian College chooses one or more students majoring in history to receive grants to help them to conduct research for their senior project or to attend a professional conference. In the past, recipients have used grants to cover the cost of trips for their research, or to purchase copies of historical resources not available on campus. The students present the results of their research during the annual Ribbons of Excellence Day conference.
